Aircraft Component Sourcing

Finding a component is one part of procurement. Understanding the right condition, traceability, documentation and commercial scope is what supports a sound decision.

Rotables and repairables

Rotable components may circulate through exchange, outright sale, repair or overhaul channels. For each opportunity, clarify whether the quoted unit is new, overhauled, serviceable or as-removed, and which history or test records are available. Exchange transactions may introduce core-return deadlines, acceptance conditions and associated charges.

Expendables and consumables

For materials such as hardware and consumables, procurement can depend on batch or lot identification, shelf-life, packaging and storage requirements. When relevant, the RFQ should state any manufacturer, material or shelf-life constraints before the sourcing process begins.

Documentation and acceptance

Documents differ by component, transaction and applicable regulatory framework. Depending on the requirement, a buyer may request release documentation, trace or provenance records, non-incident statements or maintenance history. References to FAA Form 8130-3 or EASA Form 1 should be made only where applicable; neither document should be assumed for every component.

A clear component RFQ

  • P/N, nomenclature, quantity and any approved alternates
  • Requested condition and exchange versus outright preference
  • Documentation and traceability required by the receiving party
  • Target delivery location, timeline and commercial priorities
